Department of Materials Science & Engineering
What is Materials Science?
The integrative Science and Engineering Approach is essential in order for us to remain at the cutting-edge of global competition in material-dependent high techs. We work on materials that matter.
To provide high-quality “Science-driven, Application-oriented” education & research programs in advanced materials for discovery and implementation of new technologies.
Materials Science (mə-tîr'ē-əlz sī'əns) and Engineering is a dynamic, interdisciplinary study that combines the fundamental sciences (chemistry, physics and life sciences) with applied engineering (electronic, mechanical, chemical and bio-engineering).
It strives for basic understanding of how the science of material structures and processes at the atomic scale results in the properties and functions familiar at the engineering level. One aspect involves studying and designing materials to make them useful and reliable in the service of human kind.
History of MSE
At the National University of Singapore, the history of the Materials Science Department reflects local factors. It originated in the recognition by the physics and chemistry faculty that this area would in the long run be of vital importance to the Singapore economy.
This view was based on the rapid growth of local industries dealing with semiconductors, polymers, ceramics, metals and composites. The Department started as a joint programme of Chemistry and Physics in the academic year 1991-1992. The former Department of Materials Science was officially established in March 1996. In April 2005, the department was formally transferred to the Faculty of Engineering and renamed, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
